Dutch Harbor is the gateway for ships and airplanes to access Unalaska, Alaska, a town on the Aleutian Islands at the confluence of the Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea. Surrounded by water, Dutch Harbor connects to the rest of Unalaska via a 500-foot bridge and serves as one of the nation's busiest fishing ports. The Aleutian Islands are also home to over 100 species of bird, making this area an ideal place for a bird watching adventure. Dutch Harbor also contains a number of reminders of its unique history- the onion-domed Church of the Holy Ascension preserves the Russian heritage of the area, while the Aleutian World War II National Historic Area Visitors Center commemorates the Japanese bombing and occupation of the area - one of the few episodes of World War II that occurred on American soil.
